Sniffer dogs led the cops to a nearby temple. The dogs also recovered a steel glass which is suspected to be the murder weapon.

Trigger warning: Rape

A disabled 12-year-old was raped and beheaded by her cousin as part of a “black magic ritual,” claim authorities. The horrifying incident happened in the state of Gujarat in India. The body of the girl who was speech and hearing impaired was found by sniffer dogs in Banaskantha district on Saturday after she was reported missing from Deesa, 12 miles away on Friday. The dogs sniffed out the girl's severed head and a rusted steel glass near the body that was covered in glass. The cops have arrested the 12-year-old's cousin Nitin Mali, 25, for raping and killing the girl, reported Ahmedabad Mirror. The 24-year-old cousin caught on security camera footage riding with the 12-year-old riding pillion. The police are investigating the case and claimed it was might have been a Black magic ritual, citing that the people in the district are extremely superstitious. The cops also suggested that horrific killing coincided with the new moon or Amavasya which is considered the optimum night to perform such rituals. The dogs also tracked the scent from where the body was found to a temple at the edge of the Banas river.

The authorities have sent the rusted steel glass for forensic analysis. "The case came to light when Dantiwada police found a decapitated body near the pond near Moti Bhakhar village," said the Deputy Superintendent Dr. Kushal Ojha of Deesa. “A day earlier, police were informed of the disappearance of a 12-year-old girl from the area. On the morning of October 17, the body of a minor was found by the border of Moti Bhakhar village. The police also found the severed head of the girl at some distance of the body."

The National Commission for Women (NCW) is following up on the case being investigated by the cops. Dr. Rajul Desai, a member of the NCW who spoke to the cops told Ahmedabad Mirror: “Look at these multiple coincidences. The dogs led the police to the temple. It was a moonless night and this district is still affected by such superstitions. So I asked the police to investigate this matter from a superstition perspective as well as it does not appear to be a clear-cut case as it is being made out at the moment.”

The police also confirmed that the victim's cousin was caught on security footage riding with the 12-year-old. "In CCTV footage the accused Nitin Mali, cousin of the deceased, was found to be riding with the victim on his bike. Primary investigation revealed that Nitin raped the victim and later beheaded her due to the fear of getting exposed.” The cops are yet to explore the black magic motive and stated that there's no evidence to explore the angle. “I had refused an angle of superstition and black magic because there was no evidence pointing in that direction," said Superintendent Tarun Kumar Duggal, before adding that he wasn't ruling it out. “However, we are open to all outcomes and will investigate this case from all possible angles. Right now, we are not dismissing any theory.” The 25-year man has been sent to police custody for 10 days while the cops continue their investigation on the matter. "We will be constantly investigating this case, and trying to find out what really happened,” said Duggal.
